For the Birds

Here’s a poultry update, so you can see my adventures into the wide world of poultry.  The birds are no longer small and fuzzy and adorable.  The chicks went in one of two directions: sleek and hawklike, or fat and scary.  The fat, scary ones are Cornish X birds, basically the kind you buy in stores.  These birds are bred to have a giant slab of meat up front, and they grow so fast that they can have terrible heart problems and trouble walking.  These guys are going to be dinner in the next week or two.  Though they are a week younger than the fancier chickens, they are all twice the size.  I’m sure they will be nice and tasty, but I won’t use these poor birds again…it’s a little too scary to see them explode into freaks of nature.

AJ holds a turkey poult.  I love that they have the same expression on their faces.

I love your pictures Maleesha! Thanks for posting them. They remind me of how much my son used to love the chicks we’d get every spring. He’d spend hours and hours watching them.

Okay, you need to frame that picture of AJ and the chicken. That is hilariously adorable. Their expressions are exactly the same.

Ha! I love the AJ pic too.

That's what she said!
