DEATHMATCH: Cookies vs. Donuts

What do you call it when you intentionally slide your car around in a circle in an icy parking lot?

Well, not you, probably, because you are a responsible, safe driver.  But maybe you know someone who has done that.

Carli and I call it “spinning cookies.”  We had a conversation about this last night.

This all started a couple of weeks ago when J and I were out doing some last minute shopping.  The parking lot was covered in a couple of inches of ice, and when he stopped the car’s back end slid back and forth.  “Whoa,” I said.  “You almost did a cookie!”

Then J burst into laughter.  “COOKIE?!” he howled.  “COOKIE!?”

I am glad it was dark because I am sure I turned red.  I often say things incorrectly due to the way I have heard them pronounced in my hometown.  Ask me about my “melk drinking” or the color “mahoegany” sometime.

But I knew I wasn’t mispronouncing “cookie.”  I am a fan of cookies, so I know this.

“What do you call it?” I asked.

“Everyone knows it’s a donut,” he said.  “COOKIE!!”  More laughter.  We talked about it for the next hour as we shopped, and when I say “talked” I mean he teased me relentlessy and even pointed, while I scowled.  I knew it was cookie.  At least where I come from.

So I called Carli last night.  “I need you to resolve a very important argument,” I said.

I could sense her eyes rolling.  “Sure.”

“What do you call it when you intentionally slide your car around in a circle in an icy parking lot?”

She didn’t answer right away…and here is why!  She and her husband have had this same argument.  “I always get confused,” she said, “because H made so much fun of me.  I know I say whatever the opposite of H says.”

Heh.

“Hey H,” I heard her yell.  “What do you call it when you spin your car around in the parking lot on purpose?”

“Donut,” he yelled back.

“Yeah, it’s a cookie,” she said.

I got a text from her this morning that said “Thanks by the way.  Now we are arguing about it again.”

I’ve only heard it called a donut but I think I’m going to start calling it a cookie just to see people’s reactions.

I never heard it called a cookie before. My own personal cop told me it was both…so tell Wasband not to tease you anymore! You are both right.
Miss you guys! Give AJ and Macy a hug for me!

YAY! If a cop says it, it has to be true! Thanks Rick!! We miss you too. Going to the conference?

hmmm….clearly there is some major bias against the cookie in the world. It’s obvious to Maleesha and I that spinning your vehicle around in a circle could only be referred to as a cookie…..have you seen what a maple bar looks like??? Seriously! And again…thank you for stirring up what I thought was a dead and buried argument.

Excellent point on the maple bar! But see the newer comments…a COP said we were right! Not popular, but not total freaks!

I call it a donut – but maybe your way has less calories? 😉

    I like that idea…

Well for cryin’ out loud. I sense a trend. I guess this just shows to go how goofed up my hometown is.

I’m going to go drown my sorrows in cookies…

It’s donuts for us, too. BUT! My husband says “melk”, too. Also: seZame. *rolls eyes* He says it’s a Saskatchewan thing.

Donuts here too. But, well, my sister-in-law calls her private parts her cookie.

Oh man. Around here it’s called, “doing donuts.” Like Pammy Girl, I really did want to be on your side. But if it makes you feel any better, “cookie” was cute and made me laugh. 🙂 All I know is if you do too many donuts, you could end up tossing your cookies. 😉

  16. Stacey / Jan 3 2009 7:30 am

    Donuts. Sorry.

  17. Pammy Girl / Jan 3 2009 7:12 am

While I’ve never actually done one on purpose (on accident, however, is another story), I’ve always referred to them as DONUTS. Sorry. I wanted to be on your side… I really did. 🙂
