The Twelve Questions of Christmas

Thanks to Allison for the great Christmas meme!  I am in full Christmactacular mode, I shopped.  I trimmed a tree (well, halfway).  I forced my children into fancy clothes to take photographs of them in front of said tree.  Next weekend I am going to make my homemade marshmallows and of course cookies!

1.  What’s the best gift you have ever received?  And the worst?

The best gift I ever received was my boom box, aka the “Ghetto Blaster” back in the mid-eighties.  It had a dual tape deck and two short wave tuners.  Oh yeah.  That was the best.

The worst gift I ever received was a tissue paper tiki head which you can read all about here.  It wouldn’t have been so bad, but my house was 100% decorated in “rustic woodsy cabin” so the tiki head just wasn’t going to fly.

2.  What is your favorite Christmas movie moment.

I had to think about this one.  There are so many options.  Due to the mood I am currently in, I will choose the “porch scene” with Keira Knightley from Love Actually, where the unrequited love-stricken best friend of Keira’s new groom arrives at her porch to pass on a series of messages on poster board.  I love unrequited love.

3.  What is your favorite version of a Christmas song?

I’m a sucker for the Live Aid/Band Aid megasuperstar ensemble of Do They Know It’s Christmas?  I had to write something other than the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, for once.

4.  Describe an ornament that has special significance to you.

I really have a special place in my heart for my Nissan hood ornament that I converted into a Christmas decoration, after it flew off the car in a wreck.  But it doesn’t really fit in with the woodland theme we generally stick to.  So I suppose I will have to pick my bull skull ornament.  I love it.  My husband hates it and does not believe Christmas trees should have skulls on them.  Image coming soon.

5.  Have you had any traumatic Christmas-related experiences?

Yes.  My cat, my beloved cat Spooky Tiger, who used to ride on my shoulder as I pedaled down the street on my bike, was hit by a car on Christmas Eve.  He was running across the street one morning as I called him home and SMACK.  I found his still-warm body on my way to freshman volleyball practice.  I cried through the whole practice and it was the worst thing ever.

The second most traumatic was receiving a “Bob Seger” greatest hits album from my then significant-other in 1997.  He said “I thought you said you wanted Bob Seger” he told me.  I had actually asked for a Neil Young and Crazy Horse album

6.  What is your happiest Christmas memory?

I have many happy Christmas memories but I loved the Christmas when I got the boom box and my brother got a train set.  I don’t know why but I just remember it was the perfect day.

7.  Favorite Christmas picture:

earth

8.  What’s on your grownup Christmas list (besides world peace, of course)?

9.  What Christmas TV special do you look forward to all year long?

10.  What famous person would you most like to encounter under the mistletoe?

Josh Holloway from Lost.  (Sawyer)

11.  What is your favorite Christmas cookie?

I love all forms of Christmas cookies, but I really love Russian Tea Cakes.  Mom, if you are reading this, how about it?

12.  Favorite Christmas quote?

“And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were sore afraid … And the angel said unto them, “Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings o great joy, which shall be to all my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ, the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men.

That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

I still can’t understand your aversion to the tiki head??? I happen to think it was a very ingenious gift!
I remember both your boom box because we used to spend countless hours dancing on that little rug in your room to Cindi Lauper and Debbie Gibson…and of course to “stand by me.” And the train set was totally awesome. An entire room devoted to nothing but trainness…and nintendo. So cool!!!!

There is nothing wrong with having one skull on your Christmas tree…I guess it would be a little weird if the whole thing was done that way. lol

Wow, you did a really good job with this. I love your quote…I love your favorite Christmas picture…I love that you had a dual cassette player too. My mom makes something called Mexican Wedding Cakes that looks similar to your Russian Tea Cakes (I hope she’s busy making them now).

I have been up to my ears making cookies all week long…I’m going to post pictures soon and suggest a virtual cookie exchange.

Aw, I loved reading this. Now I have some homework to do in researching the links you provided for tea cakes, marshmallows and a tiki head. LOL.
