The Twelve Questions of Christmas

Thanks to Allison for the great Christmas meme!  I am in full Christmactacular mode, I shopped.  I trimmed a tree (well, halfway).  I forced my children into fancy clothes to take photographs of them in front of said tree.  Next weekend I am going to make my homemade marshmallows and of course cookies! 

1.  What’s the best gift you have ever received?  And the worst?

The best gift I ever received was my boom box, aka the “Ghetto Blaster” back in the mid-eighties.  It had a dual tape deck and two short wave tuners.  Oh yeah.  That was the best. 

The worst gift I ever received was a tissue paper tiki head which you can read all about here.  It wouldn’t have been so bad, but my house was 100% decorated in “rustic woodsy cabin” so the tiki head just wasn’t going to fly. 

2.  What is your favorite Christmas movie moment.

I had to think about this one.  There are so many options.  Due to the mood I am currently in, I will choose the “porch scene” with Keira Knightley from Love Actually, where the unrequited love-stricken best friend of Keira’s new groom arrives at her porch to pass on a series of messages on poster board.  I love unrequited love. 

3.  What is your favorite version of a Christmas song?

I’m a sucker for the Live Aid/Band Aid megasuperstar ensemble of Do They Know It’s Christmas?  I had to write something other than the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, for once.

4.  Describe an ornament that has special significance to you.

I really have a special place in my heart for my Nissan hood ornament that I converted into a Christmas decoration, after it flew off the car in a wreck.  But it doesn’t really fit in with the woodland theme we generally stick to.  So I suppose I will have to pick my bull skull ornament.  I love it.  My husband hates it and does not believe Christmas trees should have skulls on them.  Image coming soon.

5.  Have you had any traumatic Christmas-related experiences?

Yes.  My cat, my beloved cat Spooky Tiger, who used to ride on my shoulder as I pedaled down the street on my bike, was hit by a car on Christmas Eve.  He was running across the street one morning as I called him home and SMACK.  I found his still-warm body on my way to freshman volleyball practice.  I cried through the whole practice and it was the worst thing ever. 

The second most traumatic was receiving a “Bob Seger” greatest hits album from my then significant-other in 1997.  He said “I thought you said you wanted Bob Seger” he told me.  I had actually asked for a Neil Young and Crazy Horse album

6.  What is your happiest Christmas memory?

I have many happy Christmas memories but I loved the Christmas when I got the boom box and my brother got a train set.  I don’t know why but I just remember it was the perfect day.

I love all forms of Christmas cookies, but I really love Russian Tea Cakes.  Mom, if you are reading this, how about it?
